Topic: Who is Jesus to You?
Text: Matthew 16:13 – 17
Every one of us at some point in our lives, need to answer this question both physically and spiritually and that is, “Who is Jesus to me?” Your answer to this question determines to a large extent your placement here on earth.
Jesus asked his disciples in Matthew 16:13 who people thought he was. Just as we humans, are inquisitive and want to know the opinion others have of us, Jesus also wants to know who he is to us. He wants to know what place he holds in your heart. How much you value him and the relationship you share with him. He wants to know what aspect of your family, business, marriage and finances he occupies. One reason Jesus is curious to know who he is to you is because he knows people have different opinions of who he really is as evident from our text. Some think he is one of the prophets; while others think he is John the Baptist, only Peter was able to say that he is the Son of the Living God.
Even the Jews, the people among whom he grew up had their opinion about who he was and judged him by that. In John 6:41-42, when Jesus introduced himself as the “Bread from Heaven”, they scoffed him because to them, he was just an ordinary Jew, the son of Joseph and Mary. They were unable to see him as their Savior and believe his teachings, because they judged him by his past. You must realize that just as some people had mixed up ideas of who Jesus was and judged him by his past, as a child of God some people will also have different opinions about you. Even after God has delivered you, taken you from the miry clay, set your foot upon the rock to stay and given you a brand new life, some people will still continue to see you in your past and refuse to acknowledge the wonderful transformation God has brought about in your life. Just ignore them and keep matching on.
In John 8: 9, all the accusers of the woman caught in adultery left one after the other because they were convicted by their conscience and Jesus asked the woman to go and sin no more. If Jesus means anything to you, you will hate sin. However, you need the power of God to live above sin, otherwise, you will continue to fall and rise.
Who is Jesus to you? One way to find out is to find out who people say you are. Peter was able to declare that Jesus is the “Son of the Living God” The way you live your Christian life should say something about who you are. The importance you place on Jesus and how evident he is in your life is a good judgment of how others will see you. II Samuel 22: 25-28 tells us that if you are upright in all your ways, God will be upright with you and people will see you as an upright person. The same goes for if you are merciful, righteous, froward or proud. The question is “Who is Jesus to You?”
